ELSEWHERE HOSTS PARTICULARLY EXCEPTIONAL RESIDENCY WITH TEXTILE ARTIST AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZER FRAU FIBER

June 10, 2010

Revolution Textiles, Elsewhere Collaborative’s new fabric workshop, features sewing machines from all eras for public use, displays of Elsewhere’s 58-year collection of vintage fabrics, and a mending station for Elsewhere’s vintage clothing collection.  For the remainder of the 2010 season, Elsewhere Collaborative will host ongoing textile workshops led by artists across the globe.

Frau Fiber comes to Greensboro from a background of working globally as an itinerant textile worker in locations from Dublin to New Orleans to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.  North Carolina’s rich textile industry history speaks through the collaborative quilting process with Frau Fiber.

During this particularly exceptional residency, Elsewhere event programming will focus on textile art practices and the regional industrial textile history.  From June 12 – July 2, 2010, on Fridays and Saturdays, Frau Fiber works with museum visitors in the Elsewhere museum’s Revolution Textiles for open collaborative quilting hours.  Collaborative quilting will go mobile throughout the Greensboro community on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 – 4:00 PM.  Elsewhere will host Downtown After Dinner Quilting with Frau Fiber Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during the residency from 7:00 – 11:00 PM.

Frau is seeking community partners and groups to join in the construction of the collaborative quilt under her tutelage.  Frau Fiber is also available for talks, lectures, and museum tours exploring her current projects, including Made In Haiti (http://madeinhaiti09.wordpress.com).  Made In Haiti is an ongoing micro-textile-industry started in Haiti before the earthquake.

This particularly exceptional residency is supported with a project grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, Andy Warhol Foundation, and the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.
