ELSEWHERE ARTISTS AWARDED GRANTS FOR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE CREATIVE PROJECTS
July 8, 2010
May 27, 2010, GREENSBORO, NC- Elsewhere Collaborative's artist team, the Etc. Collective, led by Directors George Scheer and Stephanie Sherman, has been awarded two project grants for creative projects in late summer and early fall. These grants solidify Elsewhere as a launchpad for international collaborations, and extend Elsewhere's objective of bringing attention to our burgeoning downtown through international exchange.
In August 2010, Elsewhere directors Scheer and Sherman (Greensboro, NC) will join artist Agustina Woodgate (Miami, FL), curator Anthony Spinello ( Miami, FL), and neuroscientist Daniel Margulies (Berlin, Germany) in Berlin for a research visit to Spree Park, an abandoned amusement park on the East side of Berlin and hosted for residency at The Neuro Bureau, a creative subsidiary of the Max Planck Institute. The group will investigate the site and associated concepts and work with Berlin arts organizations to imagine and design a larger collaborative response to this unusual place, laying the groundwork for a festival, performance, book, or film that explores the uncanny nature of an amusement park frozen in time.
Funding for the research project has been awarded by Art Matters, a non-profit foundation created to assist artists who make work intended to break ground aesthetically and socially. The grant award of $5000.00 will support travel, research, and room and board for the August visit.
Elsewhere's ETC. Collective of appx. 20 artists will travel to Atlanta, GA to present The Traveling Menagerie, a traveling street museum launching at the Flux Projects festival on the evening of October 1, 2010. The Traveling Menagerie is pulled by a beach surry, a four person bicycle, and pulls linked carts that host interactive exhibits for screen printing, record listening, reading, gardening, etc. designed and led by Elsewhere artists from across the globe. The event will open with a parade and a local marching band, and then the menagerie will park and lead guests through interactive exhibits. The Traveling Menagerie will continue a Southern Tour throughout November. Project sites TBA. Elsewhere was awarded $3500.00 from Flux Projects Atlanta to support project expenses, and the project will also receive matching support from The United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro and other private donors.
The Etc. Collective is a loose network of artists affiliated with the Elsewhere Collaborative that activates everyday investigations of play, sustainability, and inclusivity.. Through these new elsewhereelsewhere projects, Elsewhere artists will bring innovative processes to contemporary art practices and advance a more interactive, collaborative world . We are delighted to be extending the exceptional Greensboro living museum concept to global audiences while continuing to serve, connect, and build our downtown Greensboro neighborhood.
